Daytrip to Solvang

On our California coast road trip, we made a quick detour to the quaint little town of Solvang. Located off of 101, via CA-246 in central California, this was a quick and easy detour for us to take off of the Pacific Coast Highway on our way from Pismo Beach to Santa Barbara.

Solvang California, Central California, Little DenmarkAnd we are happy we did! This Danish-inspired village was such a cute and fun stop, with plenty to do for both kids and adults. Its definitely worth the trip. Take advantage of the free parking and explore this very walkable little town. Here’s a few things to do in a day in Solvang!

Eat Breakfast at Paula’s Pancakes

This was a must on every travel list we found, so we figured we would have to try it out. Let me start by saying-this place gets busy. Like really busy. We arrived at 8:30 and didn’t have to wait, but that’s only because we were a party of 2 and were willing to sit outside in the chilly morning air.Solvang California, Central California, Little Denmark

The big draw here is the Danish Pancakes. They’re basically really thin pancakes and can come with a variety of toppings. G got them with strawberries and we really enjoyed them. I got the California Omelette to satisfy my need for avocado and it was really good. You can check out their menu here.

While we did really enjoy Paula’s, I will say the lines got crazy busy after about 9 am. There are other fun restaurants in Solvang as well as Danish bakeries throughout the village if you’re not up for waiting an hour for breakfast.

Walk Around Town

As I stated before, Solvang is very walkable. Its not a very big place and is very easy to navigate. We loved just walking through all of the unique shops. Whether you’re looking for Christmas decorations in the middle of the year, unique artwork or unique vintage items, Solvang has a lot of fun shops. Just take your time and look around!Solvang California, Central California, Little Denmark Solvang California, Central California, Little Denmark Solvang California, Central California, Little Denmark Solvang California, Central California, Little Denmark

Get the Aebleskiver

You can’t go to Solvang and not get the Aebleskiver, so just do it. You can find this deliciousness at Solvang Restaurant right in town. Don’t know what Aebleskiver is? Yea neither did I.

Its basically like pancake batter cooked in the shape of a ball, with powdered sugar and raspberry jam. Sound weird? That’s ok, its really good, just try it.Solvang California, Central California, Little Denmark

The best part about Solvang Restaurant is that you can sit down and eat inside or you can just order at the to go counter and walk around town with them. That’s what we saw most people doing and it was extremely convenient. Go to a Winery or Tasting Room

Solvang actually is a great destination for wine lovers. With wine tours, vineyards and tasting rooms, you could spend your whole day tasting your way through the region. I was traveling solo with my 10 year old daughter, so obviously I didn’t partake in that option, but its on my list for a girls getaway at some point!

Visit a Danish Bakery

There are quite a few Danish Bakeries throughout Solvang. We tried several and they were all good, so be sure to grab some authentic pastries for your stroll around town.Solvang California, Central California, Little Denmark Solvang California, Central California, Little Denmark Solvang California, Central California, Little Denmark

There’s also a small museum located here, but we didn’t end up making it there because they weren’t open the day that we were in Solvang. The Elverhoj Museum is free and is open Wednesday-Sunday 11-4, so check it out if you have the time!

We loved Solvang and found it to be an interesting little stop during our Pacific Coast Highway road trip. Have you been to Solvang? What did you enjoy there? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
